Summer is supposed to be a slow time of year for blogs. And personal blog useage is supposed to be down generally anyway compared to social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook.

So I get this heads-up from Robert of the Northwest Baha’i Library. I repost content he suggests as this post:  On the Baha’i 9-Pointed Star Displayed at Jackson Memorial: 1.5 billion viewers. And then…

I hadn’t checked my Sitemeter counts in days. When I did, I was in for a big surprise.  My daily numbers for the week were close to three times what I expected them to be. Why? Because of that one post.

Traffic is always welcome to a blog, first-time visitors especially appreciated. I know from the Sitemeter records that many of those 1426 visitors whose page of entry was the MJ post went on to explore other content on Baha’i Views or, via side-bar links, to Baha’i content elsewhere. For that thank you, Michael.

There is a blogger-lesson in all this for me. It’s important not to ignore the major news events of the day.

I did a Google Blog Search for “Michael Jackson Baha’i.” (He is not a Baha’i, of course; I’m only juxtaposing keywords.)  Here are Baha’is who posted something on MJ such that they show up as a result in this search.

On the Views of Hungarian Baha’i Youth: Appealing on behalf of their Iranian brothers & sisters

The responses to the persecutions of the Baha’is in Iran come from more than just the English-speaking world, of course. Here is a well-done video done in Hungarian (with English subtitles) that reflects the feelings of Baha’i youth in Budapest and other communities in that Eastern European country. -gw

On the Wide-Ranging Accomplishments of John Kavelin: Virtuous character

Model of the main stage at the 1992 Bahá´í congress by John Kavelin.

Set for the 1986 SanFrancisco Baha’i Peace Conference by John Kavelin.

More on the life of Baha’i John Kavelin….  He worked for Walt Disney tokyo_disney_resort_logo for many years. But he also was partly responsible for the development of the Virtures images2 Project. -gw

On Easter Sunday 1988 The Virtues Project founders Linda Kavelin Popov, Dr. Dan Popov and John Kavelin had a seed of an idea over brunch at the Empress Hotel.

Tired of L.A. living, he spent six years on Canada’s West Coast, assisting his sister, Linda Kavelin Popov, and her husband, Dr. Dan Popov, on The Virtues Project. “Linda’s a psychotherapist, organizational consultant and community healer. Dan’s a pediatric psychologist and computer scientist. We felt called to try to counteract the rising tide of violence among youth and families.”
+
Scouring sacred texts from the world over, they identified a simple and profound truth: that at the heart of all spiritual traditions lie virtues described as the essence of the human heart and the content of character. “We drew up a guide containing a list of 52 virtues to help parents bring out the best in their kids and themselves.”
+
The team also developed five strategies to help restore the practice of virtues in everyday family life: to speak the language of the virtues, recognize teachable moments, set clear boundaries, honor the spirit and offer spiritual companionship. The Virtues Project is now a worldwide movement to support character.

On the Passing of John Kavelin: He was so grateful for the Baha’i Faith

“Toad Tapestry” images1 Lithograph designed by John Kavelin http://www.laughingplace.com/News-ID500430.asp

From KC by email a forwarded message that John Kavelin has passed on to the next world. -gw

John died as he lived, with gratitude, joy, and wonder. His last three sentences when he occasionally swam to the surface on Thursday were remarkable. He was unresponsive most of the time as I read to him, talked and sang to him. Mid-day or so on Friday I said, “How are you doing, Sweetheart?” not expecting an answer. To my surprise, he said, “I’ve been thinking how lucky we are to be part of an amazing global community that is always on call. Each of our parents made that choice 100 years ago.” He was so grateful for the Baha’i Faith.  A couple of hours later, he said, “Linda, I’m so happy you took this journey with me. It was perfect.” He surfaced again briefly when several Baha’i  friends stopped by in the evening. One friend joked that it was too bad he wasn’t eating anymore,  since she would have made him a blueberry pie.  He raised his eyebrows and said something like “You were?!”  as if to say,  “What’s stopping you?” His last words were, “You guys are a class act.” Again his appreciation shone through.

On the Earth Needs a New Operating System: You are the programmers

Inspired by Blessed Unrest by Paul Hawken

2685057043_cda56dc764

So, this is a mash-up of a few things, mostly:
HERE COMES EVERYBODY by Clay Shirky and
BLESSED UNREST by Paul Hawken
but, I would have to add a couple of seeds of thought by
Max Schorr of GOOD magazine (from his psfk SF talk) and
Eddie Izzard from his STRIPPED performance last night.

But this is why I really, really dig the internet. The power levers have been powerful because they have been out of reach to most except the highly-organized (so highly organized that they spend more effort on organization than anything).

From my Baha’i friend in Canada, word of this speech by Paul Hawken, reposted in full, with LOTS of quotable, Baha’i-like (and certainly in the greater scheme of things, Baha’i-inspired) lines… -gw

Subject: Paul Hawken’s Commencement Address at the University of Portland

Paul Hawken <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Hawken>  is a longtime friend of CharityFocus, renowned entrepreneur, visionary environmental activist, founder of Wiser Earth <http://www.wiserearth.org/>  and author of many books — most recently Blessed Unrest <http://www.blessedunrest.com/> . Recently, he was presented with an honorary doctorate of humane letters by University of Portland, when he delivered this superb commencement address to the class of 2009.

University of Portland, May 3rd, 2009

When I was invited to give this speech, I was asked if I could give a simple short talk that was “direct, naked, taut, honest, passionate, lean, shivering, startling, and graceful.” Boy, no pressure there.

But let’s begin with the startling part. Hey, Class of 2009: you are going to have to figure out what it means to be a human being on earth at a time when every living system is declining, and the rate of decline is accelerating. Kind of a mind-boggling situation – but not one peer-reviewed paper published in the last thirty years can refute that statement.

Basically, the earth needs a new operating system, you are the programmers, and we need it within a few decades.

This planet came with a set of operating instructions, but we seem to have misplaced them. Important rules like don’t poison the water, soil, or air, and don’t let the earth get overcrowded, and don’t touch the thermostat have been broken. Buckminster Fuller said that spaceship earth was so ingeniously designed that no one has a clue that we are on one, flying through the universe at a million miles per hour, with no need for seatbelts, lots of room in coach, and really good food – but all that is changing. CORDE is a Baha’i-inspired social economic development program in Cambodia. It stands for Cambodian Organization for Research, Development and Education. These pictures were taken last fall and winter, but were just uploaded to Flckr.

There is great interest in Baha’i news from Cambodia in Tacoma. We have members of our community who visited Cambodia on a regular basis and who have family there. -gw
