The email reminders are already finding their way to the believers in the cluster.

Hello dear friends, the Area Teaching Committee is planning our next Cycle of Growth and  wanted to remind you all of our upcoming Cluster Reflection Meeting  and Expansion phase the will begin on Saturday July 11. Now would be a good time to start  thinking about who you could reach out to during the Expansion phase  between July 11- 19.

In keeping with the spirit of preparation, the Area Teaching Committee gathered together a contingent of believers …

to deepen on the real purpose of our work and to discuss what our role is
in that work and make a plan of action for the next Expansion Phase.

Bonita and I were privileged to be a part of that meeting yesterday at which these pictures were taken.

On Call Thou To Rembrance, O Land of Ta (Tehran): Thou art still, through the grace of God, a center around which His beloved ones have gathered

”Tehran Dawn Panorama,” uploaded by Hamed Saber on flickr on 12 Jun 06, 2.57AM PDT

Call thou to remembrance, O Land of Tá (Ṭihrán), the former days in which thy Lord had made thee the seat of His throne, and had enveloped thee with the effulgence of His glory. How vast the number of those sanctified beings, those symbols of certitude, who, in their great love for thee, have laid down their lives and sacrificed their all for thy sake! Joy be to thee, and blissfulness to them that inhabit thee. I testify that out of thee, as every discerning heart knoweth, proceedeth the living breath of Him Who is the Desire of the world. In thee the Unseen hath been revealed, and out of thee hath gone forth that which lay hid from the eyes of men. Which one of the multitude of thy sincere lovers shall We remember, whose blood hath been shed within thy gates, and whose dust is now concealed beneath thy soil? The sweet savors of God have unceasingly been wafted, and shall everlastingly continue to be wafted upon thee. Our Pen is moved to commemorate thee, and to extol the victims of tyranny, those men and women that sleep beneath thy dust.
Among them is Our own sister, whom We now call to mind as a token of Our fidelity, and as proof of Our loving-kindness, unto her. How piteous was her plight! In what a state of resignation she returned to her God! We, alone, in Our all-encompassing knowledge, have known it.
O Land of Tá! Thou art still, through the grace of God, a center around which His beloved ones have gathered. Happy are they; happy every refugee that seeketh thy shelter, in his sufferings in the path of God, the Lord of this wondrous Day! Blessed are they that remember the one true God, that magnify His Name, and seek diligently to serve His Cause. It is to these men that the sacred Books of old have referred. On them hath the Commander of the Faithful lavished his praise, saying: “The blessedness awaiting them excelleth the blessedness we now enjoy.” He, verily, hath spoken the truth, and to this We now testify. The glory of their station, however, is as yet undisclosed. The Hand of Divine power will, assuredly, lift up the veil, and expose to the sight of men that which shall cheer and lighten the eye of the world.
Render thanks unto God, the Eternal Truth, exalted be His glory, inasmuch as ye have attained so wondrous a favor, and been adorned with the ornament of His praise. Appreciate the value of these days, and cleave to whatsoever beseemeth this Revelation. He, verily, is the Counsellor, the Compassionate, the All-Knowing.

Gleanings From the Writings of Bahá’u’lláh

The National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of the United States closed a recent letter with the following words. -gw

In our constant prayers for the safety and well-being of the Iranian Bahá’ís and of the people of Iran, we find assurance in the words of Bahá’u'lláh:

Let nothing grieve thee, O Land of Ta (Tehran), for God hath chosen thee to be the source of the joy of all mankind.

On Loyal and Concerned Citizens of Iran: An article of faith for Baha’is is that they may not seek to overthrow or in any other way oppose any government

Anti-Baha’i Graffiti Uploaded to flickr by iranpresswatch on 9 Jun 09, 7.33PM PDT

… the 2003 Nobel prize winner was inevitably quizzed about attempts by Iranian authorities to quell protests in Tehran.

“I condemn all human rights violations. I am not an opposition leader, I am a human rights defender,” she protested, emphasising that she was not seeking regime change.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090620/wl_mideast_afp/worldrightsngoebadiiran_20090620180642

Shirin Ebadi is not a Baha’i, but her statement in the quoted material above is in keeping with the view of Baha’is. Baha’is are not opponents of the Islamic Government of Iran or any government anywhere. Baha’is strive to be good citizens, they can vote, but Baha’is cannot endorse political candidates in partisan elections. In the case of Iran and its recent election, both of the leading candidates have been part of a government, one currently and the other back in the 1980s, that has taken an official stance to, not just deny the right of Baha’is to exercise basic human rights, but order the execution of hundreds of Baha’is. The machinations against the Baha’i Community go way back, both offical and vigilante. The anti-Baha’i graffitti pictured above and below are evidence. Of course, there is so much more evidence, both current and historical. -gw

Founded in 1953 to fight against the Bahai community, Hojjatiyeh sees the Bahai Faith as the most serious threat to Islam. The society, which takes its name from the the title of Twelfth Imam whom Shi’a Muslims expect to return in ‘the Latter Days’, rose to prominence when Ahmadinejad took office in 2005. Bahai persecutions have intensified since then. Although Bahais are not doctrinally allowed to participate in partisan politics, they have often been accused of inciting sedition in the country. Darker days are ahead for Iran’s 300,000-strong Bahai community should the ruthless hardliners manage to crush the protests.

… the refusal of the Baha’is to compromise their principles by opposing the government of Iran has paradoxically made it harder for the regime to eradicate this Faith, inasmuch as an article of faith for Baha’is is that they may not seek to overthrow or in any other way oppose the Islamic Republic (or any government), which could be used to justify the government in instituting a massive pogrom.  Despite continuous severe provocation, the Baha’is remain loyal and concerned Iranian citizens.

On Prisoners of Conscience: Roxana Saberi mentions the Baha’is imprisioned in a Washington Post article

iranianjournalistroxanasaberireleased5diezuwgzsfs

The Washington Post yesterday published an op-ed by Roxana titled “Will Elections Loosen the Grip of Iran’s Hard-liners?” The text is posted in full below.

… I also got to know two Baha’i female leaders, who along with five male colleagues have been detained for more than a year without trial. While peacefully pursuing the religious rights of Iran’s largest non-Muslim religious minority, they have been accused of spying for Israel and “spreading corruption on earth,” charges punishable by death.

It is not uncommon for “prisoners of conscience” to be detained without due process. Some are freed on exorbitant bail. As in my case, many have limited or no access to attorneys of their choice and cannot study the “evidence” against them. When hearings occur, they usually take place behind closed doors. On top of severe psychological and mental pressures, some are physically tortured, and a few have died in custody.

Iran’s people and civil society have paid the price of this “security approach.” This use of force has failed to address the root causes of social, economic and political issues while individual freedoms and human rights are being violated. Many Iranians have become suspicious of authority and, often, of one another. …

Since here release from prison in Iran, Roxana Saberi has continued to remember the Baha’i prisioners she met when she herself was in Evin Prison. -gw

On No Matter Who Is President of Iran: If I was a Baha’i, it would be as if I basically did not exist

The election in Iran and its aftermath is on the minds of Iranians everywhere in the world.

images1No matter who is the president of Iran, I would be denied a university education, a government job and a say in politics and it would be as if I basically did not exist if I was a Baha’i. I would be considered half a Shia Muslim, in all levels of society if I was Christian, Jewish, Zoroastrian or even a Sunni Muslim, no matter who is the president of Iran.

On All That Jazz: Our Thursday night art’s-lovin’ Baha’i devotional meeting

3642322295_8ce8446bc5

3642245221_0d32034ac8_mBuck, on the left sitting next to Rocky, attended his first Baha’i event of any kind, joining us Thursday night for our weekly devotional meeting. Corinne is the one who told him about it and accompanied him to our home. Afterwards he said he hadn’t enjoyed anything that much in a long time.

As usual, Walter Palmore was able to share some of his recent paintings. The prayers were powerful, the songs choices were magical (I was the DJ - the devotional jockey), the fellowship was extraordinary. We’re old bunch, but we’re not weary.

Here Walter Palmore presents one of his paintings which includes an image of himself.

Walter shared a whole series of paintings about jazz performers.

3643115426_d294f54825

Billie Holiday, of course.

And many more images of jazz performers, some quite recognizable.

On the Prohibition Against Gossip in the Baha’i Faith: When the rules may not apply

3384159125_1af517ebe7Isaac recalls the story of how his sister met her husband to be. -gw

For those of you who don’t know, gossip is discouraged in the Baha’i Faith. But I don’t think the rules apply when you’re talking about family members. So as soon as Rebeccah hung up the phone, I got straight back on and called my Mum. “Have you talked to Rebeccah lately?” I asked. “Yes, I talked to her today.” “She say anything in particular?” I asked. “Ahhh,” my Mum said, “she’s told you about Andrew hasn’t she.” “Yes, she said she thinks he might be the one. Don’t tell her I told you she told me though, she told me not to say anything to anyone.” “Oh don’t worry I won’t say anything.” “So… what do you think?” “Well she’s mentioned him a few times,” she said, “he’s clearly very interested.” “Yeah, but what do you actually think?” I asked. “I think it bloody took her long enough!”
