On Religious Beliefs and Expectations for the Future: Wanna buy a growth fund?

This blog snippet relates rather well to the uncertainies, financial and otherwise, of the present moment. There are certain expectations that Baha’is have of the future, that it is ultimately very bright, kind of like the weather report of “morning cloudiness, followed by mostly sun.” -gw
I started: So Shirley (not her name)- you would like to buy a growth fund.
Shirley: yes – my friends at work have them and they are all making good money..
I continued: Shirley you are an active born again Christian – true?
Shirley – why Yes I am.
I then said: Is Jesus coming back sooner or later?
Shirley: – Why sooner of course – I truly believe that.
I continued: That’s great. Are things going to get better or worse before the Lord returns?
Shirley said: Why worse of course, much worse – the Bible says so…
I concluded with: And you want to buy a growth fund – why???!!

What I find most odd about all of this is that the news keeps talking of lost wealth, as though it had just evaporated like water. A fundamental of any stable and sustainable economy is that real wealth does not disappear overnight. The nature of this economic downturn is that greed and empty promisory notes have finally caught up with us. It’s ironic, sad, and funny that the solution to the financial crisis is a bailout based on money that has yet to be collected and/or borrowed.
