On Is Barak Obama a Baha’i? The answer is…

Is Barak Obama a Baha’i?
The presidential candidate who promotes a world-embracing vision might not be quite as “Christian” as he first appears.

Obama, of course, is a Christian, not a Baha’i but it got me wondering about that strange mindset which holds that there has to be something wrong with anyone who talks too much about peace and unity, as if those were bad things instead of good things.

“Is there any remover of difficulties save God ? Say! Praised be God, He is God! All are his servants and all abide by His bidding. ” Nope is a simplistic answer to a simplistic question, so that’s fair. Obama has expounded ideas that many Baha’is would agree with. He professes to belong to a Christian faith. My athiest, Buddhist, Hindu, Jewish and Moslem friends find him simpatico with their beliefs as well. Should he become President of the USA, many barriers amongst racial and religious-thought groups will be challenged in unprecedented ways. The process of creating a more unified world takes effort from people of all faiths as well as those with no faith. As an old friend of mine used to say, if you are the yeast in the loaf of bread that’s your job, don’t try to be more important than the flour, or the baker, or the bread pan….just get busy doing the rising…we all need each other…

While reading “The Audacity of Hope” I found a lot of similarities between Obama’s ideas and Baha’i principles and teachings: unity, consultation, abolition of prejudices, the need to reduce the gap between rich and poor.

I also remember that our Sacred Writings state that racism is the great challenge of American society. Maybe an Afro-American president will be an important step to fight racism in America (I don’t believe it will be the final step!)

But although there these and other similarities, that doesn’t mean I support Obama. I always have in mind that most politicians never say what they believe in; they rather say what is convenient to say.

I wrote about this Obama recently:

Obviously, concepts such as world unity, the oneness of mankind, a global civilization, international government based on collective security, all constitute key Baha’i beliefs, and indeed represent signature values. However, it is my understanding of the writings that we’re NOT ABOUT BIG GOVERNMENT. I think this is a common mistake that people do: assuming that the Baha’i Faith is working to establish some mammoth form of world bureaucracy and thereby to impose a heavy burden on the peoples of the world. Nothing could be further from the truth!

We’re neither leftist or conservative, yet in a way we’re a bit of both inasmuch as we recognize values on both sides of that divide. In fact we believe in applying whatever measure is needed according to conditions to further the best interests of mankind — the Writings are very clear about this.

For from being affiliated with any ideology, our vision of world government is totally new and refreshing, it’s extremely lean, and based a whole new paradigm of government — from the local through the national to the global level. We believe it will prove more effective, economically sound and fair than anything else the world has ever seen.

Politics is about the limited physical world, the kindom on earth. Religion has to deal with the human soul, life after death and the unlimited potentialities of the human spirit “We are all creatures of the same God” we bahais are not making politics, we are concern to show all our brothers and sisters and followers of every religion Bahaullah’s message of unity.
