On Hiking as Spiritual Practice: Family outings

“Baha’i House of Worship Site in Chile: We hiked 16 kilometers!!! It was HOT…. ” Uploaded on June 4, 2006 by lua9 on flickr.

I wasn’t in on this family hike, but this is my family (albeit Baha’i family I haven’t met yet). Margo has discovered hiking as a spiritual practice for her family, and she knows about the Faith. Maybe her family and our family can take a hike together. -gw

I am a jumbly mix of Buddhist, Christian, Baha’i, and reality TV addict, and I haven’t found a church where I fit in. Aside from finding the right place, Hubby and I are out of practice. It’s hard to imagine us getting gussied up for church on one of our precious-few days off.

My friend Molly and I had a great discussion a few weeks back about spirituality and the role of the church for children. Can you raise a spiritually grounded child through the efforts of the parents only or is a religious institution also needed to accomplish that goal? We didn’t come up with an answer (but I know what just about everyone reading will say.)

I haven’t found the answer. But for now I have a plan for a weekly spiritual practice perfectly suited to our family. Hiking.

Hiking suits our family, too.
