On High Muckety-Mucks and Others: A Religion for All

Marco of Povo de Baha has left a comment to my post “On Recognition of the Baha’i Faith in Vietnam” that I will re-post here. -gw
So… who is next country to recognize the Baha’i Faith? Check this:
It is not the first time I read things like from people living in China.
The commentator Marco is quoting from is Jonathan Ansfield who lives in Beijing. He is writing in Spot-on, which describes itself as an Internet “home for an independent, intelligent and insightful look at politics and current events” offering “a range of well-written and smartly argued commentary from a variety of viewpoints.”
Here are a few thoughts about the phrase”muckety-mucks of high society”…
The Baha’i Faith is for high and low alike. We are pretty motley crew here in Tacoma, if the picture my wife took of some of the friends at our last Feast is any indication.

“Motley Crew — … is a cliché for a roughly-organized assembly of characters. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motley_crew.”
There is no one of great wealth in this picture that I’m aware of, except those with a wealth of spirit. But that is not to say that the Faith is opposed to material wealth. Not at all. –gw

Here is what Baha’u'llah had to say:
Should a man wish to adorn himself with the ornaments of the earth, to wear its apparels, or partake of the benefits it can bestow, no harm can befall him, if he alloweth nothing whatever to intervene between him and God, for God hath ordained every good thing, whether created in the heavens or in the earth, for such of His servants as truly believe in Him. Eat ye, O people, of the good things which God hath allowed you, and deprive not yourselves from His wondrous bounties. Render thanks and praise unto Him, and be of them that are truly thankful. http://reference.bahai.org/en/t/b/GWB/gwb-128.html#pg276

It’s an interesting historical aspect of the Baha’i Faith in America that many of its first aherents in the late 19th century and early 20th century would have been described in similar ways, relative to the socioeconomic status of Americans in general. It makes one wonder, what if any significance there is to the class status of those who first embrace the Baha’i Faith in a given country. Of course, the observation about who the Baha’is in Beijing are is pretty vague and may not even be accurate.
